Corten®* steel – CORrosion resistance and TENsile strength – is an original material that is becoming increasingly successful.
Its special characteristics make it of great interest:
Corten®* is considered to be a material that is “alive” and auto-protects itself – if the surface patina, in fact, is damaged or scratched, it oxidises again to build a new protection. This regeneration phenomenon can occur several times, thereby maintaining constant protection.
Its “warm character” apart, Corten steel also has other advantages: for example, it allows considerable savings thanks to the reductions in thickness and the consequent savings in weight obtained.
Steel is also recyclable by its very nature. Once the useful life of the project ends, Corten®* can be taken back to the foundry to take on any other function: the recycling percentage is close to 100%.
THE OXIDATION OF CORTEN®* STEEL
During oxidation, the colour varies from, at first, orange to a reddish-brown when the patina has stabilised. Under normal environmental conditions, this occurs in 18-36 months. Essential factors for the correct formation of the patina are alternate cycles of dry/wet, contact with the atmosphere and the catalytic action of sunlight, combined with the absence of permanent stagnant water. It is inadvisable to leave Corten steel surfaces in marine environments rich in chlorides, as they do not promote oxidation and formation of the protective rust patina.
The Corten® steel of our various products is supplied by the manufacturer in its natural state – grey or black in colour. If you do not want to wait for the protective oxide to form naturally, sandblasting or accelerated oxidation treatments can be evaluated on request. Each supply is properly certified according to the EN 10025-5 standard, which defines the mechanical and chemical characteristics of Corten steels.
