Natural ‘photocatalytic’ oxidation forms a protective patina against corrosion. This is a slow process that is completed within 12 to 18 months depending on local weather conditions. It is this patina that gives the material a warm and attractive red-brown colour, which varies in tone over the years and with the outdoor environment.

Corten® is ‘alive’ and self-protects

When the surface patina is nicked or scratched, the steel oxidises again to build up new protection. This regeneration phenomenon can repeat several times, ensuring lasting protection with five to eight times the strength of ordinary steel.
